Many industries need vibration isolation. Gravity wave detectors require vibration isolation billions of times better than conventional methods. Thus gravity wave physicists have developed expertise far beyond standard levels, providing industries with the ability to learn advanced methods and giving them a significant competitive opportunity. Due to the high reputation of the UWA vibration isolation research, WMC Ressources Ltd approached UWA with view to translating some of the UWA techniques into a compact vibration isolator for use in exploration aircraft. The UWA group has completed a 4-stage 6-degree of freedom isolator that is currently being tested on survey aircraft. This work has now been extended to further developments of vibration isolators with Gravitec and with Fugro Surveys. UWA group members have also involved in designing vibration isolation for the bells of St Georges Cathedral ( to prevent tower deterioration due to vibration).
